The Art of Designing an Outdoor Room
From flow to finishes, here’s how to make your exterior space feel like the most inviting room in your home.

In the Carolinas, outdoor living is part of the rhythm of everyday life. Creating an outdoor space that feels truly livable starts by treating your outdoor areas with the same care you would give to any other room in your home.
Here’s how I approach it.
Start with zones
The most inviting outdoor spaces have definition based on a series of experiences. A spot to sit and chat. A place to eat. A quiet moment to lounge or read in the sun. Defining these zones gives the space rhythm and purpose, which in turn makes it more functional and more beautiful.
Even a small patio can benefit from thoughtful layout. The flow of the space is more important than the size of the space.
Echo your interior palette
To create a cohesive home, I like to pull color, material, and texture cues from the interior of the home into the outdoor spaces. If your living room leans warm and neutral with touches of black and wood, we might carry that tone into the patio with teak furniture, ivory cushions, and wrought iron lanterns.
This continuity is what makes your outdoor space feel intentional rather than separate. It creates a natural extension of your home’s identity.
Layer lighting
Lighting transforms everything. During the day, shade and sunlight define the experience. Once dusk hits, it’s all about the layers. Think wall sconces near the door, soft string lights overhead, and candlelight, lanterns or rechargeable table lamps at eye level.
Well-designed lighting allows the space to shift from casual afternoon to cozy evening. And when done right, it draws people in and invites them to stay.
Add softness and texture
This is often the missing ingredient in outdoor spaces. Without it, things feel cold or unfinished. Outdoor rugs, throw pillows, cushions, and even performance drapery can completely change the mood.
Today’s performance textiles are incredibly durable, which means you can get the look and feel of your favorite indoor pieces without worrying about how they will hold up. These layers are what make your patio or porch feel welcoming and comfortable.
Consider the view from inside
A great outdoor space doesn’t only serve the people sitting in it. It also serves the view from the kitchen window or the living room sofa. What you see when you look outside affects how your home feels, even when you’re indoors.
That’s why I always think about composition, scale, and focal points from multiple vantage points. A pair of planters, a simple bench or a glimpse of warm light can turn your exterior into a living piece of art.
You don’t have to start from scratch
Whether you’re working with a blank slate or a porch that just needs a refresh, the goal is the same: to create an outdoor space that feels just as layered, intentional, and livable as the rest of your home.
If you’re not sure how to make that happen, we would love to help you. My job is to translate your lifestyle and taste into a space that works beautifully for you inside and out.
